Unveiling the Role of IoT Sensors and Data in Optimizing Learning Environments

We're thrilled to announce that our paper, "Role of IoT Sensors, Data and Insights in Optimizing Learning Environment," has been accepted for presentation at the Learning Places Scotland 2023 conference. This prestigious event brings together education and building industry professionals to explore innovative solutions for creating better learning spaces.

Introduction

We are thrilled to announce that our presentation, "Role of IoT Sensors, Data, and Insights in Optimizing Learning Environment," will be showcased at the prestigious Learning Places Scotland 2023 conference.

Our team is excited to share our research and insights on revolutionizing learning environments in schools and universities. The paper will be co-presented by Shrikant Sharma, CEO of SmartViz, together with Paul Dodd, Senior Associate Director, Scottish Futures Trust and Magnus Inglis, , Education Resource Officer, Midlothian Council, who have been instrumental in this groundbreaking work..

Presentation Summary

Inefficient buildings have long been a challenge, and school and university buildings are no exception. They contribute to 40% of global emissions and consume 3.5 times more energy than they are designed for. But the impact extends beyond energy inefficiency – it also affects student health, wellbeing, cognitive ability, and overall learning outcomes.

At SmartViz, we're addressing this gap by harnessing the power of IoT sensors, data analytics, and digital twins to monitor and optimise teaching and social spaces in educational institutions. Our presentation will showcase the latest innovations in this field, highlighting the transformative potential of these technologies.

By deploying simple, low cost IoT sensors, we can monitor occupancy, movements, indoor air quality, and energy usage in real time. Additionally, high-resolution lidar sensors enable us to anonymously track movements in larger spaces like lobbies and dining halls. Connecting the data from these sensors with timetables and building management systems, we create a comprehensive digital twin of the building and its estate, providing valuable insights into space utilization, environmental comfort, and energy consumption.

During the presentation, we will showcase real-life examples from primary schools, secondary schools (focusing on our recent collaborations with Lasswade High School), and university buildings (more on our engagement with AUDE). Live demonstrations will illustrate how this integration of IoT sensors and digital twins optimizes learning environments, leading to cost savings and improved student wellbeing. Moreover, the insights gained from our work are shaping guidelines on smart infrastructure, measurement methodologies for space utilization, and performance profiles for teaching spaces.
